Confessions of a Grant Writer: Funder Letters

A downloadable letter series for nonprofit professionals who want to tell the truth without burning bridges.

Let’s be honest: there are things we all wish we could say to funders. Like:

  • “Why is this application longer than our annual audit?”

  • “Do you really need those receipts for the $3,000 we spent on children’s toys?”

  • “You look like you care about the community. Now, can you fund general operating support like you mean it?”

This project was born from the moments where we stare in astonishment at our computer screen, laugh through conversations (so we don’t cry), and politely respond to nonsensical requirements while gritting our teeth.

Now, you can have a say without fear!

How it works:

  1. Choose a letter: Each one addresses a frustrating but common grantmaking practice.

  2. Download and print: Each letter is designed to be physically mailed or hand-delivered. No email address. No return label. No paper trail.

  3. Drop it in the mail: You can leave it anonymous or sign it, depending on your comfort level.

  4. Feel the sweet relief of finally saying what needed to be said.

Each letter is written with a tone that’s direct but professional, and includes a note to the funder explaining why they’re receiving it.

Why this exists:

Funders often say they want feedback, but most nonprofits don’t feel safe giving it, especially smaller organizations, BIPOC-led groups, and those who rely on relatively small but still meaningful grant awards. Confessions of a Grant Writer gives voice to the people navigating these systems every day, and offers funders an unexpected chance to listen, learn, and improve (plus, who isn’t intrigued by paper mail these days)??
